Papaver rhoeas Field poppy or Corn poppy This plant is a deciduous annual originating from North Africa, Europe and Asia. It is notable for its striking seedheads. The bowl-shaped flowers, to 8cm across, are brilliant red with black marks at the base. This is sometimes still found in the wild in the UK. It's shape is described as upright. It grows to a height of 0.9m and 0.3m in width. It has oval foliage that is light green. It produces flowers during mid summer that are cup-shaped and red and blue in colour. This is a hardy plant. It requires a moist, rich and well drained soil, preferring full sun, and a position in a border. It is susceptible to and should be protected from aphids and mildew.	Often seen sprinkling cornfields this variety is ideal for creating a bright splash of colour in a sunny corner where little else will grow. This hardy annual will grow to a height of 45-60cm (18-24in). Sow outdoors April to May or September to October. Staggered sowings in spring will extend the flowering season. Prepare the ground well and rake to a fine tilth before sowing, scattering the seed and raking in lightly. When large enough to handle, remove any seedlings which are too close to each other so that they are 15-30cm apart. They prefer a sunny open site but will grow in most sites and soils. For the longest flowering period and to prevent self seeding remove the seed pods as the petals fall. Flowers early summer to a height of up to 1½-2ft.
