Ocimum basilicum Basil or Sweet basil This plant is a deciduous herb originating from Asia, Mediterranean. It is notable for its striking glossy foliage. Grow as an annual It's shape is described as compact. It grows to a height of 0.6m and 0.3m in width. It has foliage that is green. It produces flowers during late summer that are spikes in shape and white in colour. This is a tender plant. It requires a rich and well drained soil, preferring full sun, and a position in a conservatory, in a container or in a vegetable garden. This plant is likely to need watering.  It is susceptible to and should be protected from aphids and mildew.	Tasting like a mixture of mint and cloves, this Basil compliments courgettes and is legendary in tomato and pasta dishes. Use fresh or dried in salads, casseroles and vinegars. This versatile herb can be used as an insect repellent and companion plant for tomatoes, reputed to improve the growth and flavour of tomatoes, and keep most insects and bugs off most of your vegetables. Sow these seeds from late winter to spring 1.5mm deep in good seed compost. Germination usually takes 14-21 days at 21-24C. Transplant when large enough to handle into 8cm pots.
