This plant is an evergreen perennial originating from New Zealand. It is notable for its striking seedheads. As the common name of the genus suggests, the bristly seedheads can be troublesome for pets but the plant itself is trouble free, forming russet-brown mats in late summer. This is the most widely grown species of the genus.

It's shape is described as prostrate. It grows to a height of 0.15m and 0.15m in width. It has toothed foliage that is dark green. It produces flowers that are spherical in shape and red in colour.

This hardy plant grows horizontally and low to the ground. It requires a rich, medium and well drained soil, preferring semi-shade, sun, and a position in a border, in a raised bed or in a rock garden.
