Bamboo Bee House

Help save our bees with this fabulous, natural Bamboo Bee House! Bees are gentle creatures that pollinate flowers and should be every gardener's friend. Now you can return the favour and encourage our little friends to your garden. It is a terrific environmentally home framed in wood with a metal roof that is perfect for bees and other garden insects and can be easily hung from a tree using the chain provided.

To attract bees, simply hang from a tree facing the morning sun. Some of the larger tubes are just the right size for masonry or leaf cutter bees. These bees do not swarm so there would only be a few of them using the box. The bees lay an egg in a tube, put balls of pollen with it and then stop up the end of the tube with leaves or mud and in the spring the young adult eats its way out and the cycle starts over.

Other insects such as ladybirds will also happily use the smaller tubes in this habitat. Ladybirds, in particular, provide a wonderful, natural garden pest removal service by helping to get rid of aphids and other unwanted bugs.

Autumn Plants - Cherry Amanogawa - 1x Bare root plant

Cherry 'Amanogawa', also known as the Flagpole Cherry Tree, is a striking architectural, ornamental cherry tree with an upright, columnar habit making it ideal for small gardens! Clusters of slightly fragrant, soft pink-white blossoms simply smother the branches in late spring and are highly attractive to bees. Come autumn, the leaves of this RHS AGM variety turn to fiery shades of yellow, orange and red giving a long season of interest in the garden. Cherry 'Amanogawa' makes a fantastic low-maintenance addition to sunny borders, where it can be grown as a specimen tree or focal point.

  • Bee friendly

    Type: Hardy Tree
    Flowering period: Apr-May
    Height: 8m
    Spread: 4m

Plant cherry trees in any well drained soil in a sheltered, sunny position. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole and drive the stake into the ground to support the tree. Staking after planting may result in damage to the root ball. Plant ornamental cherry trees at their original soil level and firm them into the ground. Fasten the tree to the stake using a tree tie, and water well.

Ornamental cherry trees do not suffer weed competition well. Keep weeds and grass clear from within a 30cm radius of base of the tree. In spring, while the ground is moist, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around the base of the tree, taking care not to mound it up against the stem. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer.

Quantity: 1 x bare root plant

    Autumn Plants - Cherry Kojo-no-mai - 1 x 7cm pot

This Cherry ‘Kojo-no-mai’ shrub, also known as Fuji Cherry, bursts into life in early spring when much of the garden is still dormant, with a flamboyant show of delicate white blossoms tinted with pink. The pretty blooms are highly attractive to bees and an important source of early nectar. Unlike the more familiar cherry trees, Cherry 'Kojo-no-mai' forms a neat, compact shrub which is ideal for small or low-maintenance gardens. Come autumn, the leaves of this RHS AGM variety turn to fiery shades of orange and red giving a long season of interest. Grow it in a shrub border alongside early spring bulbs for a show-stopping spring display.

    Type: Hardy Shrub
    Flowering period: Mar-Apr
    Height: 2.5m
    Spread: 2.5m

Pot up Prunus incisa 'Kojo-no-mai' plants and grow them on in frost free conditions until large enough to plant outside. Once they are well grown, acclimatise Prunus plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before transplanting them outdoors in well drained soil in a sheltered, sunny position. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole.

Feed and water cherry trees regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established. Once established, Prunus incisa plants require only occasional attention. Pruning of Fuji cherries is best kept to a minimum, removing only occasional damaged stems and lightly trimming those that spoil the shape of the plant in mid-summer. In spring, while the ground is moist, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or garden compost around the base of the plant, taking care not to mound it up against the stem. This will help to retain moisture throughout the summer.
