Chapelwood Rustic FSC Bee Box

This Chapelwood FSC Bee Box with a beautiful rustic finish has been specially designed to provide a safe habitat for bees. The tubes are just the right size for masonry or leaf cutter bees. These bees do not swarm so there would only be a few of them using the box. The bees lay an egg in a tube, put balls of pollen with it and then stop up the end of the tube with leaves or mud and in the spring the young adult eats its way out and the cycle starts over.

Do not be surprised if other garden insects use this box at the same time. Ladybirds in particular may happily use the bottom half of the box. They provide a wonderful, natural garden pest removal service by helping to get rid of aphids and other unwanted bugs.

  • Strong, durable construction
  • Key style hanging mechanism

This bee box is made from FSC wood, so you are ensured it comes from well-managed forests, sustaining not only the environment but also its local population. It offers excellent insulation properties and naturally resists water damage, warping and rotting.

Thompson & Morgan Foxglove Illumination Collection is the most spectacular foxglove mix you will have ever seen and consists of Illumination Flame, Illumination Pink and Illumination Raspberry. These exotic looking blooms make a striking display in your garden! Parentage from the little-known Isoplexis, or Canary Island Foxglove, gives these exciting foxgloves their fabulous tropical colouring. Being completely sterile, they will not set seed, giving them an incredibly long flowering period. Unlike most foxgloves which are generally biennial, these semi-evergreens are true perennials so you will be able to enjoy their flowers for years to come.

    • Includes Thompson & Morgan Exclusive - Illumination Pink
    • RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year 2012 - Illumination Pink
    • RHS Perfect for Pollinators

    Type: Half Hardy Perennials

Foxglove Illumination Pink:spectacular, sumptuous blooms are densely packed on sturdy stems, with many side branches, making a stunning addition to your summer borders.
Foxglove Illumination Raspberry:produces stunning spires of open-mouthed blooms in a juicy shade of raspberry pink with contrasting apricot lips.

Pot up digitalis plants and grow them on in frost free conditions for transplanting outdoors later on. When plants are well-grown and all risk of frost has passed, acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days, before planting them in borders and containers in sun or partial shade. If plants are received in the autumn, pot them up and grow them on in cool, bright, frost-free conditions over winter. Although foxgloves prefer a fertile, moist soil, they will happily tolerate almost any soil except those that are excessively dry or waterlogged.

Water foxglove plants regularly until fully established. In autumn, cut back faded foxglove flower stems to encourage plenty of new side shoots. During the winter months, move containers to a position with a minimum temperature of 0ºC, and water sparingly. Lift border-grown plants and pot them up for over-wintering.

FSC Big Bee and Bug Biome

The FSC Big Bee and Bug Biome is a multi-chambered retreat for beneficial garden insects with endless opportunities for insect study. It is made from solid FSC timber and the different features provide varied habitats for bees, bugs, lacewings, ladybirds and butterflies. Put a Big Insect Biome in your garden to improve plant pollination and the abundance of natural pest predators.

Starting at the top with drilled canes and tubes is the multi-insect dormitory. This is suitable for solitary bees plus other bugs and beetles. There are two interactive pull-out inspection plugs with perspex tubes to observe solitary bee cell making behaviour. The pine cones mark the insect refuge holes that provide shelter from predators for further species such as wood wasps and earwigs.

The swirling design of wooden holes is not only aesthetically pleasing but provides a variety of hole diameters to suit yet more solitary bee species such as leafcutter bees. The lowest chamber is the litter critter zone which can be filled with damp leaves and soil to provide a cooler zone for millipedes, centipedes and other beetle species.

Finally in front of the litter critter zone is the insect feeding terrace with its easy-clean nectar cups for butterfly feeding. That is just the front face of the Big Insect Biome, there are glazed side panels to allow inspection and access for topping up your selected natural nesting material.

Please note: Delivery is subject to plant size, and adverse growing conditions during production may delay despatch schedules.

T&M's easy starter plants are delivered ready for planting at the correct time so that you can enjoy bigger, earlier and tastier vegetables. Gradually acclimatise courgette plants to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days prior to planting outdoors. Grow courgettes in moist, rich fertile, well drained soil in a sheltered position in full sun. Prepare the soil in early spring by adding plenty of well rotted farmyard manure to the soil to improve its structure and fertility. Space courgettes at a distance of 90cm apart, and water thoroughly after planting. Cover with a protective netting or fleece to prevent attack from birds and insects. When growing courgettes, a thick mulch of organic matter spread around the plants will help to conserve moisture at the roots.

Water courgettes regularly - do not allow the soil to dry out as this will impair their development. Hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing. Courgettes appreciate an application of a high potash fertiliser every two weeks during the growing season. Hand pollinating courgettes is not usually required when they are grown outdoors. However, for indoor cultivation the female flowers can be fertilised by pressing a male flower against them. Begin harvesting courgettes from midsummer onwards when they are 10cm long. Regular harvesting will encourage more courgettes to be produced.
