Bamboo Bee House

Help save our bees with this fabulous, natural Bamboo Bee House! Bees are gentle creatures that pollinate flowers and should be every gardener's friend. Now you can return the favour and encourage our little friends to your garden. It is a terrific environmentally home framed in wood with a metal roof that is perfect for bees and other garden insects and can be easily hung from a tree using the chain provided.

To attract bees, simply hang from a tree facing the morning sun. Some of the larger tubes are just the right size for masonry or leaf cutter bees. These bees do not swarm so there would only be a few of them using the box. The bees lay an egg in a tube, put balls of pollen with it and then stop up the end of the tube with leaves or mud and in the spring the young adult eats its way out and the cycle starts over.

Other insects such as ladybirds will also happily use the smaller tubes in this habitat. Ladybirds, in particular, provide a wonderful, natural garden pest removal service by helping to get rid of aphids and other unwanted bugs.

Specifically designed to blend into the garden setting, the Hogitat is a safe retreat for hedgehogs, or small mammals.

    43 x 50 x 25cm high

    Useful Tips:
    1. Position the house in a quiet part of your garden, preferably against a bank, wall or fence. If possible add some cover such as leaves and short grass around the house.

    2. Place a few handsful of short dry grass and leaves inside the box to start a nest.

    3. Make sure the entrance to the house does not face North or North East, therefore avoiding cold winter winds.

    4. If you have a female hedgehog visitor, be aware she may have her young in it in the spring.
    5. After winter use, late March – early April, it may be cleaned out, if possible, just hose down or brush off.

    6. To make sure there is nobody in residence, put a small light obstruction in the entrance to see whether it is pushed away overnight. If it isn't, this is an indication that the hedgehog may no longer be in residence - but take care just in case.

    7. Do not treat the hedgehog house with creosote or other wood staining treatments as the fumes can be harmful.

    BirdMat

Attract wild birds into your garden with this superb BirdMat! It is a ready seeded, biodegradable mat that controls weeds and contains mixed flower seeds that have been carefully selected to attract birds. It is made up of two layers of tissue paper with flower seeds between them. This combination of layers gives the big strong flowers that birds love.

The BirdMat stops weed competition so the plants are strong and produce loads of flowers, especially in the autumn when other flowers have finished. You can lay it from March until mid August providing conditions remain good and the soil temperature is above 5ºC. When laid onto prepared soil and covered with a thin mulch layer of sand, clean soil or compost, the mat will suppress weeds and encourage germination of flower seeds in the mat.

Climate change, agricultural intensification, expansion of urban areas and transport infrastructure, and over-exploitation of our seas all pose major threats to birds. You can help the birds in your garden by making it more bird-friendly. Planting a birdmat to grow wild flowers in your garden is the best way to help. It contains a combination of annual and perennial species that will flower vigorously over an extended period including:

      Annuals
    • Quinoa
    • Corn Marigold
    • Linseed
    • White Millet
    • Phacelia

      Perennials

    • Purple Coneflower
    • Teasel
    • Sorrel
    • Salad Burnet
    • Knapweed

The bird mat must be laid onto freshly prepared soil just like any other seedbed. Remove perennial weeds like docks and thistles or they will lift the seed mat off the ground! Before laying, the soil needs to be smoothed down preferably with a light roller. The mat will stop annual weeds germinating if laid correctly. Lay the mat onto the prepared soil. Put the mat down with the dark side up. If you lay the mat upside down it will stop the flower seeds germinating. You will find a label on the mat to help you.

    FSC Insect Conservation Study Centre

This Insect Conservation Study Centre features 5 different study chambers and is wonderful garden feature as well as a fantastic resource for your garden. Brilliant for schools too! It is designed to combine interactivity, education and conservation, and features a range of habitats for interest throughout the year.

    Includes:
    Chamber 1: Solar Insect Attic
This chamber features a solar light and illuminated chamber with an access door at the back to introduce lighting and twigs as moth or butterfly attractants. The solar light has an attracting effect and allows nocturnal study of insects and moths. In the simplest form, it can act as a garden light.
    Chamber 2: Over Wintering Chamber
This is the traditional multi-insect over wintering area, which will provide insulated nooks and crannies for a wide range of insects.
    Chamber 3: Big Bug
This area has a giant magnifying glass concealed in the front door to form the ‘big bug’ area. Insects can be temporarily housed here or, with the ports open, incoming insects can be studied. At the back, there are ‘creepy crawly’ tubes where insects can be seen through the magnifying glass viewer.
    Chamber 4: The Lacewing Chamber
This chamber is pre-filled with natural straw and provides the ideal over wintering space for Lacewing. Alternatively, this section can be filled with bark if it is required as an over wintering area for ladybirds.
Chamber 5: Interactive Solitary Bee Chamber
This features removable trays for the study of developing Solitary Bees – these Bees are non-aggressive and do not swarm, so they are safe for children and pets to be around. From early Autumn, the bolt at the base can be loosened to release the trays where it is possible to observe the development of bee eggs and larvae cells.

The Study Centre should be sited in a warm, sheltered position, such as a post, tree, or wall, ideally to catch the morning sun, and about 1 – 2.5m high.

Maintenance should be minimal, the solar light battery (AA rechargeable) will need to be replaced annually and as the study centre is made from naturally durable FSC timber, no weather protection is needed. However, if over time you wish to preserve the natural colour, you can coat the exterior with a water-based stain or varnish.
